What is Shiatsu Therapy?
Shiatsu is a form of massage that originated in Japan and traditional Chinese medicine. The word “shiatsu” means “finger pressure,” which likewise describes the technique. In shiatsu therapy, pressure with the thumbs, hands, elbows, knees or feet is applied to pressure points on the body.
The theory behind shiatsu is that our body is made up of energy, called “qi”, and when that energy gets blocked it causes suffering. Shiatsu massage helps remove any blockages by realigning the meridian points which in turn balances the “qi”, the vital energy in the body and mind. When one balances “qi”, healing occurs in the body.
