Deep tissue massage is similar to swedish (relaxing) massage but with a stronger application of pressure, beneficial in releasing chronic muscular tension.  Its focus is on the deeper layers of muscular tissue, tendons and fascia (a three-dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds, penetrates and supports all muscles, bones, nerves and organs).

While swedish massage focuses on improving blood and lymph circulation as well as relaxing the superficial muscles, a deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of connective tissue and its objective is to produce changes in posture and range of motion.

Deep tissue massage centers on stretching the fascia.  It works through the connective tissue and the muscles until it reaches the deepest layers, to create freedom of movement by the dissolution of fascial adherences and chronic muscular knots.  In deep tissue massage, therapists will use their fingers, thumbs, fists, forearms and elbows to stretch every muscle and layer of fascia.
